Lake Johnson Nature Photography Class

So I again realize that I have been very lazy with keeping up with my blog and I’m working on changing that. But I wanted to let everyone know about a Nature Photography class that I am doing this year at Lake Johnson. The class is every Thursday night for 4 weeks, with an optional Saturday morning class being offered where we will go out and shoot around the lake and get some hands on experience. The class will be going over the basics of photography, such as how your camera works and understanding the functions. We will then get into the nature side of things, by going over scouting locations, equipment, and planning ahead. We haven’t had much interest in the class, but I am hoping with fall about to be here soon that maybe we can get some interest going and be able to have some fun! A very long time…

So I realized the other day that it has been over 6 months since I last put a post on here and I am very disappointed in myself for that. But I have finally gotten myself a better computer setup, which includes a iMac, Wacom tablet, and CS5. So slowly but surely I have been getting back into my editing routine and have decided to bring you some of the longly overdue ones from my cross country trip last year. These are just a few of my favorites from Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore, and the Badlands. Unfortunately, I did find out a couple months after returning home that my eye sight has slightly deteriorated, which means that some of my favorite images are just ever so slightly fuzzy. I have gotten glasses since then so that future images shouldn’t have that problem unless it is photographer error, but that doesn’t change all that I did last summer, though most were able to be saved. I am going to try and get into a better routine now and start getting more images and post up here, and getting a better website up and running. But as promised, here are some new images that I hope you all enjoy!

New Website!

I’ve finally decided that it was time to create a new website that I can actually update with work. I have decided to try Photoshelter for the site, but still using my own personal domain name for it. It is still a work in progress, but its something different that I can use to display, and at some point selling, my work. I am open to any suggestions or comments that may improve the site and hope you’ll keep an eye out for lots of new work to come!

Cross Country Trip: Grand Tetons

So after two months of being on the west coast, it all came to an end and it was time to head back east. For the trip back, we were able to spend a little more time getting to see more places, including the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, and Mt. Rushmore. Our first stop was the Grand Tetons, which provided some incredible views. These are just a couple pictures from this stop.

Columbia River Gorge

So one of my last adventures before having to head back to NC was getting to go to the Columbia River Gorge in Northern Oregon. I didn’t have much time, but I tried to make the best of my time while I was there. I got to spend some time photographing with Sean Bagshaw and David Cobb before heading out on my own to explore the waterfalls in the area. Before I left, me and my dad also had the experience of getting to climb to the top of Multnomah Falls, the 3rd tallest waterfall in the world. I also got extremely lucky that as we started heading east, I was able to capture an awesome sunset with the luck of finding a small marina in Boardman, OR. The gorge is definitely an area I want to visit again, especially in the spring when the hills are full of wildflowers. It was an area that definitely made it harder to leave Oregon, with so much beautiful scenery and I just didn’t have enough time to see it all.

So just last night, me and my internship supervisor, Sean Bagshaw, got the opportunity to go photograph a lavender farm in the Shasta Valley of Northern California. The owners of Mt. Shasta Lavender Farm were kind enough to allow us access for sunset, to photograph the farm looking out at the grand, snow capped Mt. Shasta. We had been hoping some clouds would roll in over the evening but had no such luck. Instead we got an amazing earth shadow that created a sky that matched the beautiful purple color of the lavender. Needless to say, the evening turned out to be awesome and resulted in some unique and beautiful photos. These are just some of the shots that were a result of that evening and I cannot say thanks enough to the Mt. Shasta Lavender Farm for allowing us this opportunity.

4th of July

So here in Ashland, Oregon, 4th of July is a pretty big deal with a parade in the morning, festival downtown for the rest of the day, and then a firework show to wrap it all up. The parade was a lot of fun with crazy floats and lots of different groups. After the end of the parade, most people would follow it the rest of the way down to the plaza where there were tents set up with different artist, food, and organizations. That evening, I ended up meeting my supervisor and we went and shot the fireworks. These were some of my favorite explosions of the night and just figured it would be fun to post something different. Hope everyone else had a good 4th of July!!

North Umpqua River

So this is part two of the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway, this second half being the North Umpqua River. This wasn’t the best day for shooting rivers and waterfalls considering it was a pretty bright day but I made the best of it and got some ok shots. I ended up finding some amazing waterfalls, including Watson Falls, which is the 3rd highest waterfall in Oregon. The day involved a lot of hiking but was definitely worth it in my book, even if I didn’t get some of the best pictures. Its kind of hard to believe that I’ll have to be leaving this place soon, but I can’t say I’m not considering moving out here at some point in my life, or at least going to be visiting here often.

This is just a couple of pictures from around the area where I’ve been staying which is considered the Rogue Valley. Its just beautiful around the valley, with lots of orchards, farms, and wonderful views. Its hard to believe that my time here is almost up, but I can definitely say that I’ll be wanting to come back and visit.

Last weekend I decided to visit the southern Oregon/northern Calilfornia coast, wanting to get out and see another unique feature of the western US. I made my way north to the town of Bandon in Oregon and spent some time around there. Then I started making my way south to Crescent City, California. Along the way I got to see everything from towering rock formations, to beautiful lighthouses, to just clear blue Pacific Ocean. The weekend offered wonderful weather and allowed me to just miss the crazy summer tourist rush that I’ve heard is soon to start.
